This thing between us
They call it chemistry
I would rather call it physics
In physics, since this is a force
A non-contact force
Even though we made eye contact.
There was a force of electric charges
Some touch that made our hair stand
When one took charge
And sparks flew.
It was a force stronger than gravity
That unbound us from the ground
And made us fly
No wonder cupid didn’t walk.
It was next to the magnetic force,
Since we were unlike poles,
And yet we were attracted,
It was a force for certainty
It changes the size of our hearts
The shape of our hopes
And our heads would never rest and
stop being dizzy
Yet this non-contact force
Made us long for friction
Some tension when we pulled the strings
Her thoughts were straight as a rod,
Her centre of gravity within her mystery
My thoughts scattered around me
My centre of gravity not within me.
We promised to stay close
Since the magnitude of a non-contact force
Decreases with increase in separation.
And this force defied the laws of motion
(Did Newton ever experience it?)
We didn’t resist the force with inertia
Hell, we didn’t even change our state of
rest of motion, except that how
It had felt more easy.
This change of momentum took place in all directions
When the force took only in one
I started watering the plants
And loving the neighbour’s cat.
We didn’t give an equal reaction to
the other’s action.
We knew when they needed to be alone
When they needed time?
These moments of force
left us wondering which
direction to turn in.
Following the rules of the clock
made us negative in clockwise.
So we went against time
And became positive.
We were equal and we were opposite
Our hands lay parallel when we slept
They called us a couple force.
We didn’t change anything
The positive and negative moments
were such that we were left in a state
of equilibrium
Never to be disturbed again.
